The Lorient submarine base
Discover the bunkers of Brittany.
A historic monument
Located in Brittany, the Lorient submarine base is an emblematic site that embodies a fascinating part of military history. It was built under German occupation during the Second World War. The base was designed to house and maintain the German submarine fleet, making it a major strategic element in the Battle of the Atlantic. Its access to the Atlantic Ocean made it an ideal location.
After the war, the French Navy reclaimed the site to house its propulsion submarines. Little by little, it lost its military function and was reborn from its ashes as a tourist attraction.
